June 2008 – We have
been busy with admin work and general housekeeping duties as well as
organising a wedding brunch for a couple from Los Angeles California who
are coming to the UK for their marriage.
We look forward to receiving them and their guests. So Mr
Weatherman lots more please.
May 2008 Busy month is
here and the weather is beginning to warm up still very mixed with cold
and wet days, however we brits are always optimistic about the
weather. Beer Festival and a
wedding this month and lots of changes in the garden with Arthur and
Shaun our gardeners working hard to get the garden ship shape for the
events. Oh and sorry some extra
help from Mark our new member of staff who is studying at Northop
Agricultural College good luck Mark.
Most of the staff have exams looming and we wish them all the
best. Hanging baskets have gone up
and the front of The Calveley is looking quite pretty now with the
vibrant colours of the planting etc around the building. Heres to summer.
April 2008 – It was
kind of peculiar for mothering Sunday and Easter to be so early this year,
everyone in agreement we do not like it when it falls early. Its all to do with the equinox you know. Anyway we had a great time here at The
Calveley Arms and we cannot wait for summer to arrive. Pudding club Night
still going strong and lots of fab puddings and winners. May is a busy month for us so can’t stay
on here too long. Bye
March 2008 Big days a head Mothering Sunday and Easter
Weekend lets hope the weather holds out.
Well Rice pudding was finally knocked off the top of the Pudding
favourites and it was good old Bread & Butter Pudding that won hands
down. New Wine List available lots
of new and exciting wines for our customers to enjoy and as always great
value. We have been preparing and
laying down the final plans for our future events and are pleased that
the planning for Wedding we are hosting in May is complete. Lots to look forward to in April and we
have some very special events for Bangor on Dee and Aintree. We look forward to seeing our friends
and customers again on these dates.
The garden is taking shape after the winter months and it is
almost time to put the roof back on the marquee, although I am still a little
hesitant until the winds die down.
Anyway you can rest assured that as soon as the warmer weather is
here we will be springing into action to create a restful spot for you to
watch the sun going down over the Welsh Mountains.
February 2008 – Chilly
but a great month of the year I always look forward to it as it is my birthday month. Another great
pudding club night event and Valentines evening for all those romantics
out there. Both events went very
well. February was a busy month
for us preparing and organising Mothering Sunday and Easter which falls
early this year. Don’t forget to
book if you haven’t already. Other
than that throw more coal on the fire and snuggle up.
January 2008 – We had a
great start to the new Year with a very successful New Years evening
dinner and a great New Years Day when we hosted the North West Vintage
Car Club Rally it was wonderful to see all the old vintage cars proudly
displayed at The Calveley which being an old place itself was a fantastic
backdrop to these brilliant vehicles.
A good time was had by all and we look forward to meeting with you
all next year. We also had a busy
Burns Evening and our piper was superb whilst the Selkirk Grace and the
address to the haggis was this year presented by Mr Alex Parks a
neighbour , to whom we were very grateful and what a fantastic job he did
too. Many thanks Alex and Vikki
you both really helped the evening
to get off to a very traditional start.
We had another monthly meeting of the Great Pudding Club Night to
which the overall winner was Sticky Toffee Pudding, here’s to February’s
meet. We have started to put dates to events throughout the year and these can be found on our home page
but for those who cant wait here goes.

December 07 – Kathy has been busy decorating this old 16th Century inn
which lends itself wonderfully to the decorative style she has chosen –
traditional look . Festive Menu
started its great to see the Turkey being prepared and cooked mmm the aroma is wonderful Our special
Christmas Great Pudding Club event went off well packed house and everyone enjoyed the special desert
wines we selected with our wine sommelier, to compliment the seasonal
puddings created by Kathy. The
winner this time round was Sticky Toffee with Summer Pudding and Orange
Bread & Butter Pudding joint second. We are ready for Christmas Day
and look forward to greeting all our customers who have booked in with us
for this special day Lots of comments on the decorations much appreciated
by our customers.
November 07 – Bonfire
Night one of my best nights of the year I love Fireworks and boy have we
got some good ones this year. The
Bonfire is growing gradually Phil is STILL finding trees etc to burn on
the fire and Roger one of regulars ahs arranged for a truckful of pallets
to arrive. (Not looking forward to
unloading and stacking that lot)
The truck arrived one Sunday morning and got stuck at the entrance
to the field which meant the pallets all 140 of them had to be offloaded
by hand and then reloaded on to Randal’s tractor and taken up to the
Bonfire thanks to all who helped and saved the day (and my back). November 4th and we are
having our Bonfire night celebrations all is going to plan Kathy and
Chefs have prepared sticky toffee, the Hog Roast and other traditional
goodies the garden is all set with the torches burning Bonfire lit and
BANG off go the Fireworks good display even if I say so myself. Great evening enjoyed by all before retiring to the
Pub for the quiz.
October 07 – We are
planning for Halloween, Pudding club and Christmas all our Uni friends
have gone off to their various colleges and the nights are drawing in
summer seems so long ago. Not much
else to write here but looking forward to Bonfire Night, have started
building the Bonfire already with the help of our neighbour Phil who is
having a good clearout. Fully
booked for Christmas Day sorry to anyone we could not accommodate.
September 07 – well the
time of year for parents to prepare for their offspring’s to return to
school for the Autumn term and we had lots of them here at The Calveley
searching for comfort and some kind of sanctuary. We have had a busy time preparing the
menus for Christmas and New Year and planning for 2008. No time to stand still. Another successful Pudding Club with
Rice Pudding the winner again . Woops its October already.
August 07 - What a Month August was not a lot different weather
wise to July but things were bright and happy here at The Calveley, at
last though customers were able to use the Garden and dine Al Fresco
sometimes in between the showers, Thank God for the Marquee and large
umbrellas. We had another Barbeque or two inthe garden and again
was very lucky with the weather. The Great Pudding Club met again
and the Rice Pudding was knocked off the first spot by Calveley Mess by
just one vote, phew that was close. Rice Pudding was second and
White Chocolate Cheesecake third. So Calveley Mess goes forward to
next month ( Tuesday 18th September). Kathy is already working on
her seasonal Pudds so be sure to book early. Peroni Italian Feast night
has been moved back to October and looks to be great night booking is
essential so book early to avoid disappointment. And of
course I have to mention Grandma's Birthday Bash, hmmm - on second
thoughts maybe I shouldn't.
July 07 - The month kind of came and went in the same picture
of gloom that it started very grey and very wet. Where does all
that water come from. Anyway, here at The Calveley we had a lot to
concentrate on with outside events and we had the honour of hosting two
of our clients wedding in the Garden with a Traditional Marquee.
How lucky we were, the week started and rained continuously, then
low and behold on the Saturday it cleared and the sun shone through till
evening. The wedding guests had a fabulous time and danced until
the small hours when carriages arrived and took them to their various
hostelries. We had another few events out in the garden which again we
were lucky enough to dodge the rain clouds at the right moments.
The Calveley GREAT Pudding Club met again and Rice Pudding was once again
the outright winner. As the season changes Kathy and her team will
produce exciting and very enticing puddings so watch out Rice Pudding,
your time may be up. It was also a pleasant surprise to see our
seasonal customer from the midlands out and about on there various trips
and days out, hope to see you all again next year or sooner if you fancy
the drive, we will always have a warm welcome for you.
June 07 - What a scorcher it started out as, smiles all round
our sixth formers looking forward to finishing their exams and enjoying
the summer sun. Did not last long before the rain came, we wish
Harry, Rosie, & Matt all the best in the next stage of their careers
and look forward to seeing you again. However, not to dampen our
spirits we had the second meeting of The Calveley Great Pudding Club
which was very popular ( nearly booked up for Julys meeting already so
you had better be quick) The outright winner was ...... Good Old
Fashioned Rice Pudding, made with real cream mmmmmmmmmmmm delicious and
it will be carried forward to Julys meet for a repeat performance.
This meeting of The Calveley Great Pudding Club will see individual
voting sheets which will be collected and the results made known. So
hurry and book, and get those taste buds yearning for the Chefs delights.
The Calveley hosted a few outdoor BBQ events in June and I have to say we
were very lucky with the break in the weather on each occasion.
Kathy and her Chefs have introduced a great selection of Fish to the menu
which is very impressive and include Shark Steak, Marlin, Red Gurnard to
name but a few. These are of course subject to availability but up
to now have been very well received, the proof really is in the
cooking!!!! We are investigating the re-commissioning of our Solar
Panels and have introduced low energy light bulbs where possible to help
with the effort against global warming, every little helps you
know. There you go a little insight into life at The Calveley
through June 2007 keep checking back.
May 07 - Well there you are April came and went but not without
a great success with The St Georges weekend celebrations The Barn Dance
with Live Band and caller on The Friday night was a great success and
thanks to all those that attended and supported the raffle for Handley
Church Funds. Saturday day and evening we hosted some serious Real
Ale connoisseurs who enjoyed it so much stayed until closing. On
Sunday we had another great day of tasting the delights of the 20 Real
Ales and were entertained by two very talented young men who played live
and relaxed everyone with their lazy Jazz session. Thanks
Guys. We have decide to run the Beer Festival again next Year and
this will take place over the May Day Bank Holiday period Friday to
Monday inclusive. We look forward to meeting up with all those that
came this year next year and maybe a few minibuses might be organised.
The warm sunshine has encouraged lots of you to make use of the garden
and decking area and we are pleased that so many of you are enjoying the
relaxing ambience in our "back yard". We are having an
outside bar made as a permanent feature so we can supply your every need
throughout the year. (weather permitting) On Sunday 29th April the
weather was so good we held a Barbecue from 3pm this was welcomed and
lots of you have enquired as to whether we will be doing this on an
ongoing basis YES as long as the weather holds out and you keep
supporting us. Because of the great British weather it may be wise
to call on Saturday to confirm, barbecue will be fired up and ready to go
on Sunday afternoon.
The Pudding Club starts this month on Tuesday 22nd May 2007 so be sure
to reserve your table for this Pudding extravaganza. I know Kathy
and our Chefs have been holding secret meetings to decide
which puddings will be expertly prepared to present. I know I
will be first in the queue. YUM YUM....
April 07 - Easter has arrived and we are open all over
the Easter Period booking is essential so as not to be
disappointed. The Beer Festival is organised and the local brews
have been collated ready for inclusion in the programme. To view
the events over the weekend click here for St Georges weekend celebrations We will be having a HUGE Marquee in the
garden to cater for this event (will be heated if necessary).
Tickets for the Barn Dance & Hot Pot Supper £10 children £5 and entry
to the Beer Festival Saturday and Sunday £5 includes a drink. Food
will be available both days and will be costed separately.
The Marquee is back in action and ready for those of you who wish to
enjoy the sun going down over the Welsh hills.
March 07 - Well we have finalised a date for April and the
celebration of St Georges Day Monday 23rd April. We will be having
a BEER Festival weekend from 20/21/22nd April 2007 to
celebrate. Kicking off on Friday with a Family Barn Dance and live
band with caller Foxes Bark, Kathy will be serving up some
scrumptious tucker to compliment the evening so be sure to obtain your
tickets early. This is for all ages and will be a great start
to a fine weekend of traditional Cask ales from local and national
breweries and there will be light bites available on Saturday
and Sunday which will be supported by local suppliers. We would
like this to be a real traditional English local event.
Mothers Day is zooming in on us and bookings are coming in thick and
fast so don't delay full three course set lunch £22 per person children
11 and under half price, 3 sittings 12/3 & 6pm onwards for the
evening session with Annie Long singing Jazz from 7 till 9pm followed by
Geoff with his quiz. Great family day come along and join us.
January 07-Like the rest of the Country we
experienced very high winds, in fact Gale Force. Unfortunately for
us, our Marquee stood up to the challenge from the West until
approximately 3.30pm in the afternoon, one gust of wind lifted the
Marquee up in the air and dropped it as quick as it had lifted off the
floor and landed on the downside of the decking area leaving the Marquee
at a precarious angle. The roof bars and stabilisers twisted and buckled,
it looks quite sad for itself. We will have the Marquee back
in action for the spring and summer ( Cup Final a must) for the enjoyment
of our patrons who enjoyed last year dining alfresco and watching the sun
go down over the welsh mountains.
We have sold on the Morris
Dancer and it is now no longer part of our organisation, we wish the new
owners well.
January has been a mixed
month for us, but overall still in line with last year. Burns Night
was a great success here at The Calveley the only problem experienced
this year was by the Piper. He was HUGE and had to keep ducking
down under the beams as he strutted his stuff up and down the restaurant,
avoiding the jugs etc hanging from the ceiling. Nevertheless, a
great start, so look out for events to come throughout the year.
February - Valentines Dinner, March Mothers Day, St. Patrick's Day, April
- Easter, St Georges Day special Weekend, May (not confirmed yet) June
Charity Midsummer Ball in A huge Marquee in the Garden Area, July - we
have a wedding at The Calveley and a special event, August holiday time
for most so no event as yet. September, October, November, to be
confirmed & December well we all know what happens then here at The
Calveley, its just magical!
